Production & Graphic Design Assistant (Contract)

Job Description:This contract/temporary position provides production and design support during our demanding exhibition and fundraising schedule. The position will oversee the production process (layout, review, mock-ups, pre-flight, and printing) of design projects on deadline and provide design support for print and web-based communications. Dependability, attention to detail, strong work ethic, and a positive attitude are all considered to be vital to employment.

Essential Functions

  • Follows the Museum’s graphic standards in all print and other visual materials to create and maintain a consistent visual image for the Museum.
  • Provides on-going production and design support, servicing many departments within the Museum.
  • Oversees production process of design projects on deadline (includes scheduling, print production details, vendor liaison, obtaining print quotes, checking and approving color proofs, press checks, and filling out purchase orders) as assigned by the Graphic Designer and Director of Creative Services.
  • Maintains relationships with all print, paper, and pre-press vendors, including bids, purchase orders, and quality and cost analysis.
  • Flows in copy and designs typography for existing monthly and quarterly templates, including flyers, posters, and various other printed pieces.
  • Works with the Senior Editor to make corrections/revisions and gain approval on all projects, including digital proofs and bluelines.
  • Provides design support to the Graphic Designer and Director of Creative Services as needed.
  • Performs photo research, photo editing, and creates clipping-paths of images.
  • Provides re-sizing, production, and uploading of print ads in collaboration with the Graphic Designer.
  • Develops and creates graphics for the Museum’s website, Museum Store website, dynamic signage, and HTML e-mails in collaboration with the Graphic Designer.
  • Completes projects on time, within established budgets, and maintains Museum quality standards.
  • Works strategically with other Museum departments to effectively route and approve design projects.
  • Works evenings and weekends as needed or requested.

 

Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesBachelor’s degree.

  • Minimum of 1-2 years production and graphic design experience.
  • Fluent in Adobe Creative Suite: In-Design, Photoshop, Illustrator and Acrobat, Suitcase font management, and Microsoft Office on a Mac OSX platform; experience in HTML, Dreamweaver, Flash and PC platform a plus.
  • Experience and knowledge of offset printing, digital printing, and press checks.
  • Excellent production art skills, including scheduling, workflow, revisions/corrections, light design, scanning, creating mock-ups, creating pre-press-ready mechanicals and design files.
  • Accurate typing/keyboarding skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Skills in typography, color and composition.
  • Extremely detail-oriented with strong organizational and project management skills.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and remain organized in a fast-paced team environment.
  • Ability to multi-task and handle multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Ability to work with the public and co-workers professionally and tactfully.
  • Ability to supervise and work effectively with outside vendors.
